2010 WSOP Update

As the World Series of Poker winds down, just a little more than 200 players remained on Thursday. One of the top players in the tournament, Johnny Chan, was still alive while many more had already folded their cards, including Scotty Nguyen, who looked strong just a day before.

They stayed alive amid tense circumstances. During the first hour of play on Wednesday, 74 players were eliminated. That’s more than one per minute and it set the tone for a tense and competitive day of play.

One element that complicated play involved players who began to take the game seriously and as a result also took more time to make their decisions. Some opponents, in return, called the clock to force the players to make a move. Doing this forces players to make a decision within one minute and this is followed by a tournament official.

Other known players who were still in the hunt include Phil Galfond, a player who has become a bit of an online sensation with his online poker handle “OMGClayAiken”. Also still in the hunt was James Carroll, who has already cashed in twice in this year’s WSOP.

This year’s WSOP has the second largest number of players ever, and the player with the winning hand at the end will take home the cash prize of $8.94 million. Once the final table is determined – and that will happen this weekend – the tournament will end until November, when the final table will be played for that final cash prize.
