2010 WSOP Hellmuth Entrance

At least one poker superstar was rolling his eyes at Phil Hellmuth’s entrance at the World Series of Poker Main Event on Wednesday.

Doyle Brunson twittered, “"I'm glad I'm not playing today so I won't see Hellmuth make a fool out of himself with his entrance. I can't help thinking it's terrible.”

Hellmuth is known for dramatic and sometimes controversial entrances when he arrives at the World Series of poker. In 2007, he arrived in a Ultimatebet race car accompanied by 11 UB models (one to represent each of his WSOP bracelets he had won at that point). In 2008, he arrived in a Jeep, dressed at General Patton and with 11 similarly clad models (still represetnign those 11 WSOP bracelets).

On Wednesday, he arrived at the Rio Casino dressed as a fighter and was introduced by MMA announcer Bruce Buffer. Again, there were girls, this time dressed in pink robes and dacning, and there were two male dancers, who simulated MMA moves while Hellmuth made is entrance.

Brunson was not amused, but Hellmuth said he thinks most of the other poker players enjoy his entrances.

“(I think about) 70 percent of the poker world, maybe more, loves the entrances,” he said. “"I think this stuff is good for poker. … Poker can be a little slow sometimes."

Brunson twittered later that he was sorry for his comment, but said most of the people who commented on his tweet were on his side. “Sorry Phil, but I got 103 responses. 99 agreed with me, 4 didn't. I love you anyway, gl in the WSOP."

Hellmuth was late to the event Wednesday so only played a short time. Some poker watchers believe that this Main Event could be the second largest in history, with about 7,000 entrants. The record year was in 2006 with 8.773 entrants.
