Clonie Gowen

Clonie Gowen PicturesAs a former beauty pageant queen, Clonie Gowen seemed destined to become a force to be reckoned with. After all, her given name of Cycalona was inspired by the fact that she was born during a terrible storm in Oklahoma. Born November 30, 1971, Gowen didn’t start making a name for herself in the world of poker until she was in her 30s.

Before getting involved with poker, Gowen was actually a sports enthusiast. In fact, she was ranked seventh in the high jump while she was in high school and she was a member of a basketball team that competed at the state championship level. At the same time, she was able to let her feminine side shine through. When she was 15 years old, she earned the Miss Teen McAlester Oklahoma crown.

Perhaps Gowen gets her competitive spirit from the fact that she was raised with two brothers and three sisters. Or, perhaps she gets her poker talent from the fact that her boyfriend’s father introduced her to the game when she was in her teens. Regardless of where it comes from, Gowen has enjoyed a great deal of success at the tables.

Gowen’s first major tournament took place in 2002 when she competed in the World Poker Tour Costa Rica Classic. Here, she just missed making it to the final table when she earned a 10th place finish. Nonetheless, her performance earned her an invitation to the World Poker Tour Ladies’ Night Invitational, which took place in September of 2003. Here, she took first place after beating out more experienced poker players such as Jennifer Harman and Annie Duke.

Gowen has continued to build a name for herself at other poker events. In July 2005, she came in third at the Full Tilt Poker Championship in Las Vegas. In December 2005, she managed to come in fourth in the Fourth Annual Five Diamond World Poker Classic.

Although Gowen once owned a travel agency, she is now a full time poker player and a wife with two children. In addition to competing in poker, she also takes on work as a guest commentator and hosts charity events and tournaments throughout the United States. Some of the more notable events include commentating at the Ultimate Poker Challenge and at the European World Poker Championship in Dublin. Her involvement with poker goes beyond just commentating, however, as Gowen is also a member of the board of directors of the United States Poker Association.

Gown also works as a poker teacher and is a partner in a poker school that teaches students the basics of how to play in tournaments and how to be a successful player. As a sponsored Full Tilt Poker player and a member of  Team Full Tilt, she can also be found at the online poker site helping amateurs improve their game. Players line up at Full Tilt for the opportunity to play against Gowen and she always enjoys a large number of observers who gather around to watch her play online.
