Annie Duke

Annie Duke Female Player PicturesKnow as The Duchess of Poker or simply as The Duke, Annie Duke is an accomplished author as well as a poker player.  It seems that Duke was destined to be a great poker player, as her brother, Howard Lederer, is also a professional poker player.  The fact that both Annie and her brother grew to become such loves of the game should come as no surprise, as her parents were both academic types that enjoy playing games of chance with their children.

Duke’s father, Richard Lederer, was a teacher and an author. Her mother, Katy Lederer, was also an author and a poet.  Duke started off following in the footsteps of her parents, earning a double major in English and psychology.  She was only one month away from earning her Ph.D. when she decided to leave the university behind and move away from Pennsylvania with her husband, Ben Duke.  It was after moving to Columbus, Montana in 1992 that she started playing poker.

Duke and her husband were having a difficult time making ends meet while in Montana.  After confiding in her bother, he sent her a small amount of money so she could start participating in the back room games that were taking place in the town bars.  It was here that she started to develop her skills and, in her first month of playing, she made $2,800.

As a young woman in her twenties, Duke’s initial poker playing experiences weren’t exactly pleasant.  Most of the people she played against were male and much older than her.  Nonetheless, she had a thick skin and was able to use the negative attitudes of other players against them.  By 1994, she and her husband moved to Las Vegas and she became a full time poker player.  In 2000, she managed a 10th place finish in the World Series of Poker Main event.  Today, many consider her to be the best female poker player in the world.

Although Duke enjoys a great deal of popularity and media attention, she remains humble.  In fact, she has openly said she does not believe she is the greatest female poker player in the world.  Rather, she feels a number of different factors have helped her gain so much notoriety, including the fact that her brother is a poker superstar.  Nonetheless, she has won millions of dollars with the game and has earned a number of different poker titles.

Duke currently holds the female record for having the most “in the money” finishes at the World Series of Poker.  In 2004, she won $2,000,000 at the first World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions event.  She has also won a World Series of Poker bracelet in Omaha HiLo.  Duke now refuses to play in women only events and, in 2006  she finished 88th in the World Series of Poker Main Event.
